Evelyn Genevieve (Good) Bowers, age 86, died peacefully at home on Sunday, October 31, 2021 after several days of visiting with family and friends, singing hymns, sharing prayers and reading scripture to her. Evelyn died of natural causes and is resting at peace with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Evelyn was born February 17, 1935 in Jarrettsville, MD in a farmhouse. She was the daughter of farmers and grew up understanding the value of putting in long hours and hard work to achieve your goals. Grant Hazel Good, her father, was from West Virginia and had worked in forestry and railroads before moving to Maryland and becoming a farmer. Her mother, Altie Opel (Brown) Good, managed the farmhouse and raised their two children, Roy and Evelyn. During WWII both of Evelyn’s parents took jobs to support the war effort and worked at Glen L Martin (now Lockheed Martin), her father as a machinist and her mother as a riveter (This is the same plant where the “Rosie the Riveter'' legacy began).
Evelyn met and married her college sweetheart, Stanley Williams Bowers, while attending Eastern Nazarene College in Wollaston, MA. Although two years older than Stan, Evelyn was taken by his handsome looks and mature approach to life. Stan discovered a beautiful, quiet woman with an uncanny sense of humor that made him laugh. To her dying day, Evelyn maintained her sense of humor, finding unique ways of turning a phrase or looking at a situation and providing one of “Evelyn’s Zingers” as we all came to know them. After college, Stan and Evelyn moved to Washington, DC where they became involved in the Washington District of the Church of the Nazarene. Evelyn was a self-taught organist and supported several churches over the years with both organ and piano music for services. Feeling called to support missionary work around the world, Evelyn became a local church member of the Nazarene Missions International (NMI) as well as joining the Washington District NMI Council where she served for 28 years. The last 4 years on the District NMI Council were spent as the President of the Council. She was well loved and respected in the district for her commitment and hard work that supported global missions and was recognized by the district for outstanding service of 28 years on the Washington DC NMI Council. Evelyn continued to serve missions in local churches after leaving the Washington DC district and became president of the NMI at several Nazarene including Grace Church (DC), Melwood (MD), Marley Park (MD), York (PA), Fellowship of Faith (TX), and Georgetown (TX) Church of the Nazarene.
Evelyn began her career as an elementary school teacher at Randall Hyland Private School in Washington DC. Her daughter, Marilyn was one of her first pupils and still remembers how strange it was having to call her mother “Mrs. Bowers” at school and “Mom” at home. Evelyn later joined the ranks of the US Civil Service where she provided administrative service skills to the Department of the Army, Department of the Navy, Department of Defense at the Pentagon and the Federal Railroad Administration (Department of Transportation) where she retired in 1994. A highlight of her career in Civil Service, Evelyn was awarded a Superior Performance Award by the Secretary of Transportation, Elizabeth Dole, for her role in the sale of Conrail in 1987. After retirement, Evelyn joined the National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) where she served in her local chapter to support other federal employees.
Even while working, Evelyn raised two children, Mark and Marilyn, providing a safe and comfortable home life, teaching them skills that would help prepare them for life on their own growing up, developing Christian character, and instilling in them a love for God that would eventually lead both to their own decisions to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior.
Evelyn is survived by her husband of 64 years, Stanley; her brother Roy and his wife, Carolyn; her son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Robin Bowers of West Henrietta, NY, grandson Timothy and his wife, Olivia, and grandson Steven; daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Michael Tucker of Round Rock, TX, grandsons and their families, Nathan & Madeline, great grandson Cash and great granddaughter, Charlotte; Nicolas & Jennie; Christopher and Madison, great granddaughter and namesake, Evelyn (Evie); several nieces and nephews, and many extended family members.
