Ethel M. Whitacre

Florence Ethel McNeal Whitacre (Ethel) passed away on May 6, 2018 at the age of 89 in Wheaton, IL where she lived with her daughter. She was born June 6, 1928 in Fredericksburg, VA to John William McNeal and Blender Augusta Headley. She was married 65 years to C. Glenvil Whitacre, whom she married September 9, 1951. Ethel graduated from Medical College of Virginia with a nursing degree in 1949. She worked in public health with tuberculosis patients as well as in hospitals and as a private duty nurse. She was an avid reader, with a particular love for biographies.

She leaves her sister Nita Coates Davis of Mt. Pleasant, TX; brother J.W. McNeal of Lancaster, VA; daughters Clarissa Whitacre of Linthicum, MD, Carla Whitacre Mayer and husband, Peter Frank Mayer of Wheaton, IL. She was known as “Granny” to her two grandchildren Luke Whitacre Mayer and Kate Whitacre Mayer, whom she enjoyed living with the last year of her life. She is preceded in death by her husband and her son Craig Glen Whitacre.
