ERNEST LEE SMITH, age 71, of Bel Air, Maryland, died at Mariner Health of Forest Hill on October 22, 2003. Born in Lord, Maryland, (Near Frostburg), he was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth McKee Smith. He graduated from Central High School in Lonaconing, Maryland in 1950 and Frostburg State College in 1954. He completed his Masters Degree in 1969 at the University of Maryland. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1954 and served in communications with the 101st Army Division for 2 years and then served in the inactive reserves for 5 years. He began his teaching career in Harford County in the elementary school of Aberdeen High School in 1956. He also served at Hall’s Cross Roads, Oakington Elementary (now known as Roye-Williams and Deerfield Elementary). He was one of the first elementary teaching assistant principals and served in that position until his retirement in 1992 after 36 years of service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 39 in Bel Air, MD and the Maryland Retired Teachers Association.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 29 years, Janice Louise Dobbeck Smith; one son, Ernest David Smith of Willards, MD; one daughter, H. Lorraine Truitt of Berlin, MD; one step-son, William Park of Bel Air, MD; one step-daughter, Karen Park of Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
