Emily M. Lee of Edgewood died November 23, 2003, at the Lorien Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Belcamp. She was 85.
Born on July 21, 1918, Driggs, Idaho, she was the daughter of the late Rachel and Joseph Herzog and wife to Owen W. Lee, Sr., CSM, US Army (Retired). Emily was married to Owen W. Lee, Sr., on March 2, 1943, Salt Lake City, Utah. Not only did Owen serve his country, but Emily did, too. She traveled with her husband when she could, depending on the assignments Owen had. They went as a family to Germany twice, Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Jackson, South Carolina, Fort Wordon, Washington, and finally Edgewood Arsenal, now called Aberdeen Proving Ground, Edgewood Area, Maryland. Emily started working for the Army, Air Force Exchange in 1954 at Fort Carson. She continued working for the Exchange system every time the Army moved them. A mother of three rambunctious boys, wife of an NCO officer, a Boy Scout den mother, working was a challenge. In her own hard working spirit, she was a working mother when a "housewife" was the thing to be.
When Owen and Emily arrived at Edgewood Arsenal, they lived in quarters while their new home was being built in the up and coming neighborhood called Edgewood Meadows. Emily worked at the Edgewood Arsenal Post Exchange cafeteria. Her tenacity was observed and she was moved to the main Post Exchange and became a shift supervisor. She was awarded an "Accommodation Award" for duty above and beyond. A total of 16 years Emily worked for the Army, Air Force Exchange System until 1974, when she retired for medical reasons.
During the Vietnam War, Emily gave up her husband to serve in Korea, her oldest son in the Navy to the coast of Vietnam, and her middle son to the land of Vietnam all at the same time. Her youngest son left home to take care of mom. All, by the grace of God came home safely. Her hard working will held down the home front while her men were protecting freedom.
Emily was a member of Towne Baptist Church, Joppatowne, Maryland.
