Emalyn Corts McNutt Kirkwood, born March 18, 1922, died Jan. 16, 2017 at her home in Bel Air. Born in Delaware, she was the daughter of Edwin and Sarah McNutt of Darlington and wife of Edwin L. Kirkwood, Jr.
Raised in Darlington, she graduated from Dublin High School. She married in 1942 and moved to the Bel Air area in 1953. Emalyn was an active member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, led Vacation Bible School and helped with church suppers. She was very active in helping with the farm work, running the Fruit Stand, and keeping house with 7 children. In her retirement years she was an avid quilter making quilts for premature babies. She made dozens of quilts, which she donated, to Johns Hopkins Hospital. She will be remembered for her work ethic, her intelligence, common sense, love for family and ability to make a great pie.
In addition to her husband of 74 years, Mrs. Kirkwood is survived by her sister Sarah Brown of Darlington; her children, Gloria Evans of Calabash, NC, Martha and Joe Graham of St. Augustine, FL, Ginnie and Bob Bullis of Bel Air, Sharon and Michael Miller of Hershey, PA, Becky and Eric Rutherford of Bel Air, Melinda and Mark Sparacino of Churchville, and Jerry and Dorothy Kirkwood of Trinadad, CO; 15 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter Bonita Louise and brothers Wesley, Edwin, Willis, and Alfred McNutt.
There will be a service of remembrance at Mt. Tabor UMC Feb. 4 at 10:30 am with graveside service at the Darlington Cemetery.
