ELIZABETH MASON BLACK HOOPES, a loved and respected first grade teacher at Forest Hill Elementary School, died on February 20, 2004 at Broadmead Retirement Home in Cockeysville. She was 89.
Born October 11, 1914 in Forest Hill, she was the daughter of the late Barnet Harper Black and Laura Mason Black.
She attended Forest Hill Elementary School and Bel Air High School. She graduated from Towson Normal School in 1934 and held a B.S. degree in Elementary Education from Towson State College. She did additional studies at the University of Maryland and Duke University. During her early career she taught second and third grades at Old Post Road School. The remainder of her service was at Forest Hill Elementary School where she taught first grade. Her students best remember her for her unique laughter and loving care. She retired in 1976 after teaching 26 years in Harford County Public Schools.
She resided with her family at Quaker Hill Farm until 1995 when she moved to Broadmead Retirement Home. She was a former member of Centre Methodist Church in Forest Hill. She later joined Little Falls Meeting of Friends in Fallston where she and her husband celebrated their 50th anniversary and renewed their marriage vows in 1991.
Mrs. Hoopes is survived by her husband of 62 years, Herbert Russell Hoopes; two sons, James W. Hoopes and his wife, Mary Lou of Forest Hill and Donald M. Hoopes and his wife, Patricia of Forest Hill; and four grandchildren, Jennifer Hoopes, Mark Hoopes, Kimberly Hoopes, and Rachel Hoopes.
