Elizabeth Margaret Dolan, age 77, of Joppa, MD, passed away after a brief illness on June 19, 2014 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, MD. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of the late James Francis and Elizabeth Margaret (Mannix) Dolan. Elizabeth is survived by her cousins, Lawrence P. O'Connor of Thiells, NY, Mary A. (O'Connor) Caulfield of Bowie, MD and Michael Mannix of Wilbraham, MA.
Elizabeth grew up in, and was a long time member of Mary's Nativity parish in Flushing, NY. She attended The Mary Lewis Academy and Mary Immaculate Hospital School of Nursing in Jamaica, NY. She went on to have a very successful nursing career and retired from Booth Memorial Hospital in Flushing as the Associate Administrator and Director of Nursing Services. Elizabeth loved to travel and visited many countries either with friends or on her own. Nothing would keep her from doing what she wanted to do! She was never without a book and did a crossword puzzle daily. After retiring, she became active with the homeless ministry at her parish, St. Kevin's in Flushing. Elizabeth moved to Joppa, MD in 2006 and, although it was hard to imagine her outside of New York City, she thrived in her new home. She quickly assimilated to Maryland, becoming an avid Ravens fan and even rooting for the Orioles, the American League counterpart to her true love, the New York Mets. She continued to offer her time to those in need through the outreach ministry at her parish, St. Francis de Sales in Abingdon. She also began playing Bingo each week with her friends at the parish. She met wonderful friends in her condominium association and they enjoyed Monday morning coffee and various trips together, most recently a Caribbean cruise in May. Elizabeth lived life fully and with true happiness. She was a devoted cousin and friend. She was compassionate and loving and knew when to be gentle or when to be tough. Elizabeth was a wonderful example of how to always remain positive and how to make the best of whatever life presented. For those who knew her best, her absence leaves a void that will be hard to fill.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Attn: Outreach, 1450 Abingdon Road, Abingdon, MD 21009.
