Elizabeth Bowen, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away at her home on February 15, 2004 at the age of 87.

Mrs. Bowen was born in Washington, DC to the late Carrie Elizabeth Marion Maddox and Benjamin Elkins Maddox. She was the wife of the late William Bowen to whom she was married for 33 years and with whom she had 6 children.

In addition to raising her 6 children, Mrs. Bowen worked outside the home at Bainbridge Naval Training Center and the Veterans Hospital in Elsmere, Delaware. She also worked as a Home Health Care Provider in Harford County for a private nursing agency and she trained at Ruth’s Beauty School where she earned her cosmetology certificate. In her later years, she also owned and operated YesterYear Antiques. Mrs. Bowen’s volunteer activities included Harford County Meals on Wheels and the St. Ignatius Church Food Bank in Forest Hill, Maryland.

Mrs. Bowen was an accomplished gardener and cook as well as an enthusiastic follower of auctions from Hill’s in Pennsylvania, where she was well known by both the owners and fellow auction attendees, to a regular at Amos’ Auction in Bel Air on Friday nights. Mrs. Bowen traveled extensively during her life visiting Thailand and Germany and much of the United States.

Mrs. Bowen never met a stranger and enjoyed a wealth of friends. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family and friends. She is well known for her generosity, kindness, and good deeds for others. Mrs. Bowen will best be remembered as a devoted mother, sister, relative, and friend.

Mrs. Bowen is survived by her sons, Ronald and Michael Bowen, and her daughters, Barbara, Nancy, Pat, and Teresa, as well as 9 Grandchildren and 12 Great-grandchildren, and her sister, Caroline Tracy of Owings Mills, Maryland, a cousin, Margaret Pierce of Bel Air, Maryland, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Those who desire may contribute to St. Margaret’s Catholic Church, where Mrs. Bowen was married, at 141 Hickory Avenue, Bel Air, Maryland 21014.
