Elaine Crowe, age 97, of Forest Hill, MD passed away on January 2, 2018 at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD. Born in Wilna, MD, she was the daughter of Milton Raymond Walker and Frances Eleanor (Daughton) Walker and was the wife of the late Raymond M. Crowe. She attended one, two and three room schools in Harford County and then was graduated from Bel Air High School in 1937. Her college days were spent attending St. Joseph College in Emmitsburg, MD from which she received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1941. She returned to Harford County to teach English, Library, and Secretarial Science to grades seven through eleven in Havre de Grace and Bel Air.
Elaine and Raymond Crowe met as counselors at Junior High Camp at Western Maryland College, Westminster, MD. She retired from teaching to marry Raymond, a Methodist minister serving in Midland, MD on July 29, 1949. Together they served Midland, Cresaptown, Linden Heights and Ferndale Charges. While at Cresaptown, their children, Stephen and Rachel were born.
While teaching in Bel Air in 1949 Elaine was initiated into The Delta Kappa Gamma Society, an international society for Key Women Teachers. For 42 years she served as the Maryland State Treasurer for this organization. Elaine also served as treasurer/manager of The Epworth Federal Credit Union, a credit union began in 1957 for Methodist ministers of the Baltimore Conference. She retired as treasurer/manager in 1990, but continued to serve the credit union as a member of the Board, a member of the credit committee and as secretary until 2010.
Elaine was active in her church since a teenager, serving as a teacher, choir member, director, organist, communion steward, Shepherd and Pastor’s wife. She was a member of the United Methodist Women of the local church, of the district, and of the Conference, receiving five membership pins for her service. She was a Lay Speaker, a member of Annual Conference and an officer in the Asbury Methodist Home Guild.
Elaine was also active in community work-chairman of the Federal Food Distribution in Bel Air, an officer of the Bel Air Golden Age Club, and the Harford County AARP. Elaine had been nominated as one of Harford County’s Unsung Heroines and also as one of Harford’s Most Beautiful People.
After Raymond’s retirement in 1978, the couple moved to Forest Hill, MD. Raymond died in 1985.
Mrs. Crowe is survived by son, Stephen R. Crowe and wife, Lillian, of Airville, PA; daughter, Rachel Fox of Brooklyn, MD; four granddaughters, Doris Fitch, Wanda Wright, Danielle Farmer and Anne Marie Fox; five grandsons, Allen Walker, Michael Walker, Randy Walker, Timothy Crowe and Andrew Fox; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and sister, Norma Stec and husband, Frank, of Abingdon.
