Edwin “Ed” Cornelius Sokel, Jr., age 90, of Parkville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2025, at Oak Crest Senior Living in Parkville. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Edwin was the beloved son of Edwin Cornelius Sokel Sr. and Catherine Elizabeth (Livingston) Sokel. He was the devoted and loving husband of the late Edna Sokel, with whom he shared 49 wonderful years of marriage.
A man of great character and dedication, Ed proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard, a chapter of his life he reflected on with pride. He was a longstanding member of the Joppa Magnolia Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus, embodying a spirit of service and community.
Family was the center of Ed’s world, and his greatest joy came from spending time with his children and grandchildren. From coaching his son's little league football team, to spending time at the beach with his grandchildren. He is known for his sense of humor, he was always joking and creating special moments with them. Sunday mornings in Ocean City, Maryland were particularly treasured, often spent at Barn 34, enjoying the "Ed & Edna Omelette" with family after church—memories that will forever remain in the hearts of his loved ones.
Ed was an avid sports fan, cheering passionately for the Baltimore Colts, Ravens, Orioles and all college sports. He also enjoyed golfing and cherished the time he spent in Ocean City, where he created countless happy memories.
Ed is survived by his loving daughter, Kimberly Irwin, and his three sons, Eric (Anna) Sokel, Brian (Tammy) Sokel and Peter Novak; and grandchildren, Ashley, Courtney (Jared), Shenan, and Sikara, Ricky (Molly), Paris, Gavin. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
