On July 21, 2012 Edward Dukehart "Duke" Coale of Darlington, MD passed away peacefully at home at the age of 78. Born in Baltimore, MD on April 7, 1934, the eldest child of the late Harry Edward Coale Sr. and Evelyn Dukehart Coale, he was a lifelong resident of Harford County.
Duke attended St. Margaret School and graduated from Bel Air High School. He worked for C&P Telephone Company during high school and worked the family farm in Darlington until the late 1950's when he began hauling cream from local farmers for Mayfair Creamery in Buffalo, NY. This evolved into long-haul trucking of dairy products for Cloverland Dairy in Ohio and Friendly Ice Cream in Massachusetts. He later worked with his brother, Michael, as president of Coale Truck Transport, Inc. in Joppa, MD where he was shop foreman and managed the Volvo truck parts department.
Duke is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ethel May Harmeyer Coale; his children, Linda Tinsman and her husband, James, John Coale and his wife, Donna, and David Coale, all of Darlington, MD along with James Coale and his wife, Cynthia, of Charleston, SC; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by sisters; Lucy Heckman of Bel Air, MD, Sarah Hanlon of Middletown, DE, Susan Souder of Hilton Head, NC and brothers; Joseph Coale of Darlington, MD, Lawrence Coale of Colora, MD and Harry Edward Coale Jr. of Lawrenceville, GA.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Frederick, Michael and Robert Coale, and sister, Betty Waldron.
Pallbearers will be Edward Coale, Aaron Tinsman, Oliver Tinsman, Collin Tinsman, Lee Coale, Charles Coale and Steven Hanlon. Honorary pallbearers will be Ambre Chenoweth, Sabrina Coale, Lily Cooksey-Coale and Lyra Cooksey-Coale.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Joan of Arc School, 222 S. Law St., Aberdeen, MD 21001 or Amedisys Hospice of the Greater Chesapeake, 7106 Ridge Road, Suite 100, Rosedale, MD 21237.
