Dr.-Rev. Thomas W. Godfrey, Sr.

June 13, 1936 — April 22, 2023

Dr.-Rev. Thomas W. Godfrey, Sr., age 86, of Abingdon, Maryland passed away on April 22, 2023 at his home. Born in Rock Camp, West Virginia, he was the son of Ezra and Regina (Davis) Godfrey. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served as a Combat Engineer for 4 yrs. and Civil Air Patrol Chaplain for 25 yrs. He was also an Auxiliary Chaplain in the USAF where he held the rank of LTC in New Port News VA. He was a member of Ministerial Credentials via The Assembly's of God / Potomac District throughout MD, VA and PA for over 60 yrs. until his health began failing. He also served as a staff member for the Congressional Advisory Board for the Ronald Reagan Administration (8 yrs.) Army and served in many committees at APG in an advisory capacity working strategically for the Environmental Coalition of Maryland Military.


He earned his BBS, MBS, DD and PHD. via Valley Forge Christian College (formerly known as Eastern Bible Institute) and at Southern Seminary. Rev. Thomas Godfrey fostered church planting and was successful in reestablishing churches in need of leadership across the MD, VA, PA tri state area for 60 yrs. He was the keynote Minister annually for the Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship and held city-wide tent Crusades for Christ across MD, VA and PA. also having had both radio and television ministry. He was presented the Key to the State of WV by the Mayor of WV for his excellence across the region. Being well traveled, he has preached throughout the United States, Europe, Asia Minor, Greece and Egypt.


After all, he considered his greatest achievement in his life being a loving husband, father, father-in-law, and grandfather.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Anna Godfrey; children, Dianna Mae (Mark) Watts of Boston, VA, Cynthia Marie (Gary) Mitchell of Shrewsbury, PA, Karen Lynn (Tony) Lysakovski of Conowingo; Thomas William Godfrey, Jr., Wendy (Jeff) Snyder of Bel Air, and Shelly Anne (Carl) Durst of Grantsville: and 27 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son-in-law, James Wilson Jr.


In lieu of flowers, monetary contributions can be made to Reverend Godfreys widow, Anna Mae Godfrey.
