Dr. William P. Houpt, M.D. (Retired Emergency Physician), age 80, of Bel Air, MD, died on May 25, 2010 at his home. Dr. Houpt was born in Hagerstown, MD, the son of the late William Francis and Marguerite Cecilia LeBounte Houpt. He graduated from Loyola High School, Loyola College in 1950-CumLaude with a Bachelors Degree in Premed, and the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1954. He served his internship at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
He went on active duty in the U.S. Air Force as a Medical Officer from 1955 to 1957 and inactive duty with the Air Force Reserves until August 1963 when he was honorably discharged. He worked in General Practice from 1957 to 1961 in Baltimore and was Medical Director of Fisher Body & Chevrolet Assembly Plants from November 1961 to 1969; Emergency Medicine at Church Home & Hospital from 1969 to1975; Emergency Physician at Maryland General Hospital from 1975-1985 and was Co-Chief of the Emergency Department for two years. He was a member of the Baltimore City Medical Society, Maryland State Medical Society, American Medical Association, an Industrial Medical Association member where he was President of the Maryland Chapter; Fellowship in I.M.A., Charter member of ACEP and member of the Board of Directors. He held medical privileges at Mercy Hospital, Maryland General, and Church Home & Hospital, specializing in emergency medicine.
Dr. Houpt was the beloved husband of Mary Jane Saffran Houpt of Bel Air, MD; loving father of William Frederick Houpt and wife, Brenda, Robert Bruce Houpt, John Timothy Houpt and wife, Amy, and Michael Joseph Houpt, all of Bel Air, MD; and one grandson, Wyatt Timothy Houpt.
