Dr. Leonard D. Wheeler, age 73, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on September 11, 2012 at his home. Born in Washington, DC, he was the son of the late Leonard B. and Clara B. Fuller Wheeler. Dr. Wheeler retired, after 32 years, from the public school system. He earned his BS degree from Coppin State University, his master's from Morgan State University and his Ed.D. from Temple University. During his career he was a teacher, curriculum specialist, principal and worked for six years as Assistant Superintendent of Baltimore City Public Schools. He was also a retired associate professor in the Department of Education at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland and was President of the Harford County Board of Education. He was an avid member of Ames United Methodist Church where he was also a Lay Minister. He served on the Judicial Nominating Committee for the county and the Harford Land Trust. He was an active member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and was a past Trustee with the Woodbourne Board, the New Hope Academy, Harford County Partnership for Families, Harford County CORE Service Agency, and the Harford County Board of Elections.
Dr. Wheeler is survived by his wife, a former assistant superintendent of the Harford County Public School system and who currently is the superintendent of the Kent County Public School system, Dr. A. Barbara Wheeler of Chestertown, MD; sons, Christopher D. Wheeler of Bel Air, MD and Leonard B. Wheeler of Baltimore, MD; daughters, Evangeline Wheeler and Vell Wheeler, both of Baltimore, MD; brothers, John and Warren Wheeler; sisters, Clarene Wheeler, Debrah Wheeler and Jackie Anderson, all of Baltimore, MD; and grandchildren, Zari Wheeler, Rebecca Karema and Rachel Muhammad, all of Baltimore, MD. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Eddie Wheeler.
