Bel Air

Dr. Frederick Lewis Hodous, age 88, died on June 28, 2023 at his beloved home, Watersounds, in Bel Air, MD.  Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of Dr. Frederick Otis Hodous and Elizabeth (Johnston) Hodous.

He was the first oral surgeon in Harford County and was well respected for his skill and empathy, particularly his nightly calls to each and every patient. He was the President of the Harford/Cecil Dental Association and a lifelong Rotarian. He was an Honorary Conch of Key West, Florida, where he and his wife spent their winters for over 20 years. Frederick, better known as Buzzy, was an avid boater, skilled fisherman, and had his 50-ton captain’s license. He loved skiing, dancing, traveling the world, and was a champion backgammon player.

Most of all, Buzzy, affectionately known as Guv to his grandchildren, loved being with his family. Whether on the shores of Ocean City, Maryland, Key West, Florida, or surrounded by the beauty of their cherished Harford County home, Buzzy could always be found entertaining those he loved. Be it through a joke, sharing his antique treasures from his worldwide collection, or performing a lively song on the piano or harmonica, his audiences were always captivated.

Frederick is survived by his beautiful wife of 65 years, Joan Henderson Hodous; children, Kira Hodous Dare of Havre de Grace, Frederick Wells Hodous of Portland, Maine, and Carla Hodous Yeago and her husband Christopher of Abingdon; granddaughters, Scarlet Corinne Dare, Jennifer Hodous Yeago, and Dorothy Elizabeth Potter; grandsons, Oliver Wells Hodous and Avery Dean Hodous; and step-grandson, Robert Edward Dare. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Thomas Knight Hodous and wife Margaret of Morgantown, West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Patricia Hodous Schmidt, brother, John Johnston Hodous, and sons-in-law Robert Alan Dare and Thomas Robert Foster.
