DR. EARL J. LIGHTCAP, JR., age 75, of Abingdon, died at his home on December 9, 2003. Born in Quarryville, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Earl Jacob, Sr. and Kathryne E. Garner Lightcap. He graduated from West Chester State Teachers College at the age of 20, he earned a Master’s Degree from the University of Delaware and a Doctorate from University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from Blackstone School of Law. He came to Maryland in 1949 to teach. He taught seventh grade at Havre de Grace Junior-Senior High School and then he taught U.S. and World History at Bel Air High School for three years. He subsequently became principal of Old Post Elementary School for two years. In 1954, he became the principal of Edgewood High School where he remained until 1970 when he became Assistant Superintendent for Administration. He retired from Harford County Public Schools in 1980 after 31 years of service. He was inducted into Harford County Public Schools Educator Hall of Fame in 2002. He was a Boy Scout Leader in Abingdon. He spent eight years in the 1980’s as a member of the Board for the Research for Better Schools think-tank group located in Philadelphia. An avid reader, he loved hunting and fishing, and all outdoor activities including boating.
Dr. Lightcap is survived by two sisters, Betty L. Dando of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania; Hazel (Bunny) Propst of Oxford, Pennsylvania; eight nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Thelma Ressler of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
