Dorsey "Maverick" Frazier Hamrick Sr., 88, died at home on Sunday, 17 June, after a long illness. Dorsey was born in Greenbrier County, WVA. , and moved to Maryland when he was sixteen years old. He was a son of the late Elise Williams Hamrick Underwood and Henry Hamrick and stepson of the late James Underwood. Dorsey was one of eight children born to Elise and Henry Hamrick and half brother to an additional 14 children born to his father, Henry and wife Edna. Mr. Hamrick is survived by his wife of 65 years, Alice Ruth Waggoner Hamrick, and eight children: Janet Dawson, Barbara Evans and husband Willard of Darlington, Alice McQueen and husband James of Bel Air, Vickie Erickson and husband Ronald of Cecil County, Elizabeth Carol Brown and husband Robert, Dorsey Hamrick Jr. and wife Eunice, William "Eddie" Hamrick and wife Jennifer, and Tina Hamrick all of Street, MD. He is survived by 17 grandchildren: Glenn Dawson & wife Charmane, George Dawson, and Robert Utter all of Darlington, Katherine Friend and husband Brent Shreiner of Whiteford, Charles Dawson & wife Debbie of Pylesville, Maragret Waters & husband Scott of Bel Air, Lisa Chabarria & husband Jay, Kayla and Danielle Hamrick of Street, Alison and Madison Hohenstein of Texas, Christopher James Hamrick, Michael and Alicia Butcher, Loritta Brooke and Ronald Erickson all of Cecil County and Steven Utter and wife Ashley of Springfield, VA. He was great grandfather to Zachary, Chelsea, and Taylor Dawson and Robert, Samantha and Christopher Nevin all of Darlington; Aubrey Shreiner of Whiteford, Luke, Evan, and Peyton Dawson of Pylesville, and Morgan Brown and Alexandria Chabarria of Street, MD and Jayden Johnson and Gianna Rose of Cecil County. He was also a great great grandfather to Tyler Brown of Street, Faith Nevin of Darlington, and Rylee Trees of Abingdon.
He was predeceased by his sisters Fannie Pritt, Susie Dudley, Delsie Barker and Loretta and Elsie Hamrick, half sisters Kathy Hambrick and half brothers Joe, Darius and Denver Hambrick and his son-in-law, Glenn Smith Dawson.
He is survived by the following half-sisters Frances Blankenship, Lily Harr, Bernice Tincher, Lucinda Irene Winkler, Gilley and Dorothy Hambrick and brothers Roger, Robert, Joe, Roy, Okey, Delbert, and Jack Hambrick. He left behind a score of nieces, nephews, and other family and friends. He will be sorely missed.
Mr. Hamrick was a World War II Navy veteran entering service on 22 October 1943 and discharged on 22 December 1945. He was a Signal Man on the LST 378, which was laid down on 12 December 1942 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched on 6 February 1943 and commissioned on 10 February 1943. During World War II, LST-378 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the following operations: Sicilian occupation – July 1943, Salerno landings – September 1943, Anzio-Nettuno advanced landings – January through March 1944 and the Invasion of Normandy – June 1944. Before the Normandy invasion, he was part of the crew that laid identifying markers to guide landing craft during the invasion.
To honor other war veterans, he was one of the original founders and a lifetime member of the Darlington-Dublin VFW Memorial Post #10146 in Street, MD and a member of the Whiteford American Legion Post.
Mr. Hamrick had a successful and varied career first working for Bethlehem Steel Company. Then as a batch plant operator and member of the Operating Engineers Local 37, where he participated in the construction of the Peach Bottom Power Plant and the New Bay Bridge. Later, he was a successful small business owner and real estate developer. As the former, he was instrumental in pursuing legislation that secured liquor licenses to local businesses and did away with county owned liquor stores. Mr. Hamrick was a lifelong patriot and respected member of his community.
