DOROTHY (DOROTHEA) ELIZABETH LOUGHREY, formerly of Bel Air, died at her home on October 26, 2005. She resided at the Glen Meadows Retirement Community, Glen Arm, MD. She was 85.
Born in Oberelbert, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Anna Barbara Kaufman. Accompanied by her mother, she traveled to the United States by troopship in 1921. She lived most of her life in New Jersey before moving to Bel Air in 1986. She was a communicant at St. Margaret Catholic Church in Bel Air.
After graduating from Drakes School of Business in Elizabeth, New Jersey, she enjoyed a long career working as a secretary/office manager for various New Jersey companies.
Later, she became Executive Secretary in the Research and Development Division of J.B. Williams Pharmaceutical Company in Clark, NJ, from which she retired in 1982.
During her retirement years, Mrs. Loughrey traveled extensively with her husband, Jim. Some of their favorite places were Alaska, Panama, Mexico, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Hawaii, Bora Bora, Tahiti, Fiji and American Samoa. A highlight for them was touring Germany where Mrs. Loughrey was reunited with family and friends in the small Rhine Valley village where she was born.
She is remembered as being especially devoted to her husband. She was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, and Oma. She was known as a “people” person who always had a hug for everyone. Her kindness, compassion and love will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Mrs. Loughrey is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, James J. Loughrey. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Shannon, and husband Tom, of Bel Air, and Karen Wilson, and husband Bruce, of Edinburg, TX; son, Terrence J. Loughrey of Austin, TX; six grandchildren, Sarah Wilson of Philadelphia, PA, Andrew Wilson of Austin, TX, Brennan Loughrey of Waco, TX, Marianna Loughrey of Austin, TX, Karen Sorg of Bel Air, and James Roberts, and his wife Leigh Ann, of Bel Air; and three great grandchildren, Alexander Rolf Sorg, Christopher James Roberts, and Benjamin Ryan Roberts, all of Bel Air.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Advent Lutheran Elementary School, 2230 Rockspring Road, Forest Hill, MD 21050 in memory of Dorothy E. Loughrey.
