DOROTHY EDITH TALLEY, age 88, of Joppa, died in Upper Chesapeake Medical Center on February 9, 2003. Born in Batesville, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Russell Custo and Elette Virginia Ervine Pritchett, and the wife of the late Risdon Talley. She had worked as a seamstress in a garment factory. She was a member of the Salvation Army for over 70 years. She was an active Sunday School teacher, involved in the youth programs at the Salvation Army Church, and also did volunteer work with the Salvation Army until her death. She received the Buncombe County, North Carolina Volunteer Award for helping the homeless. During the 1980’s she received the Soldier of the Year Award and was nominated Hometown Hero for her continued help to the homeless. She was also an active member of the League of Mercy.
Mrs. Talley is survived by two sons, Berkley E. Jenkins of Joppa; James R. Talley of Baltimore; three daughters, Betty J. James of Joppa; H. Christine Nickerson of Bel Air; Patricia E. Wright of Black Mountain, North Carolina; one brother, Fred R. Pritchett of Lynchburg, Virginia; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Gerald L. Jenkins, Sr.; three daughters, Doris A. Jenkins; Shirley M. Jenkins; Alice V. Willoughby; two brothers, Billy Pritchett; Rev. Lawrence Pritchett; and one sister, Thelma Perdieu.
Pallbearers will be: Michael Nickerson, Sr., Michael Nickerson, Jr., Charles Nickerson, Robert James, Sr., Art James, and Gerald Jenkins, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Salvation Army Woman’s Program, Haywood Street, Asheville, North Carolina 28801.
