Doris Mae (Howard) Kefauver, age 94, of York, Pennsylvania, passed away on June 20, 2024, at home in York, Pennsylvania. Born in Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Stewart and Edna (Preston) Howard and the beloved wife of the late Luther M. Kefauver, Jr.
Doris graduated from Stewartstown High School in Pennsylvania. She was an active member of Jarrettsville United Methodist Church in Jarrettsville, Maryland, and enjoyed participating in activities with AARP in Madonna, Maryland, including bus trips and attending their 50-year anniversary venture to Hawaii. For several years, Doris worked as a secretary for USF&G Insurance Company in Baltimore, Maryland and later for York Corporation in York, Pennsylvania. She also worked part-time as a bridal consultant for a bridal shop in Bel Air, Maryland. However, her primary dedication was to her family, where she excelled as a homemaker and built strong bonds with her loved ones.
Her passion for being a grandmother was evident in the love she had for her grandchildren and her new great-granddaughter. Doris enjoyed reading fiction and historical books, working on puzzle books, and engaging in sewing, knitting, and crocheting, often creating items for charity. At her residence in Normandie Ridge, she was actively involved in crafts and playing pinochle and dominos and taught knitting to other residents. She was also close with her neighbors in the cottages and played a vital role in her community.
Doris is survived by her two daughters, Rebecca Lohmeyer (John Lohmeyer, III) and Rachel (Corey) Mann; her son, Keith (Karen) Kefauver; three grandchildren, Aimé Lohmeyer, Laura SkyQuest, and Richard (Rebecca) Mann; and her great-granddaughter, Beatrice Mann.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Charles and Nora Preston of Stewartstown, Pennsylvania, who raised her in their home with her mother. She was also predeceased by her aunts, Ruth (Milton) Preston Brown and Ethel (Reed) Preston Ebaugh, whom she considered her older sisters. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her cousin, John M. Brown, and 9 brothers- and sisters-in-law, Melvin (Helen) Kefauver, Robert (Ann) Kefauver, Charles (Mildred) Kefauver, Marcelene (Thomas) Adams, Walter (Olive) Kefauver, Myrtle (Clinton) Johnson, Eleanor (William) Kunkle, Margaret (Jay) Vaught, and Betty (Robert) McLaughlin.
When asked for a quote by a local student completing a social studies assignment, Doris replied “I have lived a blessed life.”
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 4217 Park Place Court, Glen Allen, VA 23060.
