Donald John Cassett Sr.

Donald John Cassett, Sr., 80, of Darlington, MD, passed away at home, Tuesday, September 12, 2017. He was born April 23, 1937 in Caretta, West Virginia. He was the son of the late Louis and Mamie Cassett. He is survived by his loving wife, Kay Cassett; his twin brother Ronald Cassett of Kingsville; his sisters Sylvia of Havre de Grace and Carol of Kansas; his son Donald John Cassett, Jr.; his daughter, Leah Cassett; step-children, Rick Casteel and wife, Anita, Neil Casteel and wife, Sharon, Tommy Casteel and wife, Melissa; 9 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by many friends, family, cousins and brothers and sisters at his church, in the fire company and Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Ryan Casteel.

Donald graduated from War High School and then entered the Army National Guard. He moved to Maryland in 1958 where he went to work at Sparrows Point. Then he worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department where he retired after 30 years of service. He joined Joppa Magnolia Fire Department in 1958. Donald was a member of the Darlington Volunteer Fire Company for 20 years. He received his 50 year golden axe in 2006. He won the prestigious James Warner Award in 2017. Donald, over the years, was given numerous certificates, nominations, and commendations for service to the community and the local, county and state government.

Donald loved to fish, hunt and cook. He was known most for spending time and telling stories about his time in the Fire Department. He was instrumental in organizing the Darlington Fire Police Association. He faithfully attended Darlington United Methodist Church and the Darlington Lions Club.
