DONALD H. KUMMER, age 76, of Joppa, died at his home on March 9, 2005. Born in Severn, Maryland, he was the son of the late Leslie Henry, Sr. and Violet Winafred Herwig Kummer, and the husband of the late Elizabeth Anne Murray Kummer. After 38 years of service, he had retired from the C & P Telephone Company where he worked as a cable splicer and later as a safety instructor. A resident of Harford County in the Joppa area since 1963, he served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II and the Korean Conflict. He served on a destroyer escort and as a signalman in the Quartermaster Corp. He was a past member of the Boy Scouts and served as an assistant Scout Master. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He belonged to Joppa Magnolia VFC since 1964, and during his tenure served as financial secretary and ambulance driver. He was an active ambulance responder up until last year. He enjoyed teaching as a field instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute at the University of Maryland. He was one of the first CPR instructors while at the Arbutus VFC and was one of the first EMT instructors in Maryland. He enjoyed traveling and reading.
Mr. Kummer is survived by one son, Richard D. Kummer of Nottingham, Maryland; one brother, Robert W. Kummer, Sr. of Lake Wales, Florida; two sisters, Eileen F. Calender of Virginia; and Thelma M. Collins of Florida. He is also survived by a dear friend, Ruby Rockwell of Joppa.
