On March 26, 2021 Donald Smith, age 86, of Bel Air, MD went home to be with the Lord. He was the son of the late David and Frances Smith of Lancaster, PA. He was raised in Holtwood, PA and attended Penn Manor High School and graduated from Penn State University. Upon graduation, he went to work for General Chemical in Claymont, DE.
It was there he met his wife, Hope Clothier, and they had three children: Stephanie Giangiulio (husband Peter), D. Jeffrey (wife Ali), and David Lyle (wife Nancy.). Hope Smith passed on to the Lord in 1988 and Don later married Norma Miller of St. Louis, MO in 1992. Norma survives him and together they loved and shared Don’s grandchildren: Amanda Giangiulio (fiancé Peter McCoglan), Adam Smith (wife Brenna), Maggie Matisak (husband Tom), Bradley Smith, Jessica Lampe (husband Randy), Hope Jones (husband Wes), and David Smith Jr. Don also had six great grandchildren, Carter and Carson Jones, Lorelei, Layne and Londyn Lampe and Tomas IV Matisak.
Don was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara S. Fisher of Willow Valley, PA He is survived by his brother, Bob Smith (wife Pat) and brother-in-law Bill Fisher of Willow Valley, PA.
Don’s working career included 37 years with General Chemical and retiring in St. Louis as Manufacturing Manager of General Alum facilities. He later went to work for GEO Specialty Co. as Plant Manager of their Baltimore works and retired in 2001 as Manufacturing Manager for their chemical plants. He continued to do consulting work for another 17 years.
Don loved all sports, especially Penn State Football. He enjoyed golf, softball, and swimming. He especially enjoyed playing cards with his family and watching sports on TV.
Don loved his church and was very active in the various church communities in which he lived. During his younger days, he was active with the youth groups and later with administrative functions of the church. The family and church were always very important to him.
