Dewey Clinton Simmons, Sr., 97, of Bel Air, Maryland, passed away June 27, 2018, after a brief illness. He was a Navy Veteran who served aboard the USS Amsterdam as a Fire Controlman Third Class during World War II and received the Pacific Theatre Ribbon, American Theatre Ribbon, and a Victory Medal.
Dewey was born in Bailey, Iowa, to Coy and Lillie Simmons. He married Bessie Francis Chalone in 1945, and had 59 years of marriage until Bessie’s death in 2005. They had three children: Shirley of Fairbanks, Alaska; Dewey Jr. of Rising Sun, Maryland; and Gary of Earlville, Maryland, deceased. Dewey is also survived by four sisters: Audrey Hawks, Avis Blakely, Joyce Amoss, and Charlotte Harris. Predeceased by Doris Pennington, Ronald Simmons and Larry Simmons. He is survived by five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and many more caring relatives. His partner of the last 10 years, Norma Jaeger, passed away in November, 2017.
The family would like to express their thanks to the staff of Jacob’s Well for making Dewey’s final months pleasant, as well as Hospice.
