She was born in Batavia, NY, and raised in Linwood, NY, as the second youngest of 11 siblings. She attended Pavilion Central School and the Geneseo State Teachers' College (now SUNY Geneseo). Upon graduation from college she moved to Bethpage, NY to pursue a teaching career in elementary education. She married "the boy next door" (literally) - Daniel "Danny" Schiavetta - in 1951. They raised 7 children, one who died in infancy. Delphine taught at both Powell Avenue and Pine Avenue Schools. She was a lifetime member of St. Martin of Tours Church in Bethpage, where for many years she participated in the choir, taught communion and confirmation classes and was an active member of the mothers' club.
Delphine is preceded in death by her husband Daniel, who died in 2003, and her son Jamie. She is survived by 6 children (Daniel Schiavetta, Stephen Schiavetta, Christine Stratford, Mary Schiavetta, Annie Schiavetta-Wells, and Michael Schiavetta) as well as 9 children and 1 great grandchild.
Delphine enjoyed (aside from raising her family) reading, music and singing, and good food, especially well-salted food. She will be remembered for her love of children, her wit and amazing strength, and her gift for revising and performing interpretive recitations of children's classic poetry.
Funeral services will be held at a later date in New York.
