David Jay Smith, 82, of Abingdon, MD, passed away on June 30, 2015 at his home. Born in New Stanton, PA, he was the son of the late William Amos Smith and Golda Sybilla (Lynch) Smith. He retired, after 30 years, as a Sergeant Major in the U.S. Army where he served three tours in Germany. He then worked in civil service for 10 years at Edgewood Arsenal for Tech Escort. Raised on a small dairy farm, family was important to him and he enjoyed being present for his kids and grandkids activities. He also enjoyed bowling and hunting.
Mr. Smith is survived by his wife of 59 years, Inge Gisela (Holtz) Smith; sons, David B. Smith of Abingdon and Steven M. Smith and wife, Janine, of Glen Burnie; brother, Melvin A. Smith of New Stanton, PA; sisters, Emily R. Newell of Greensburg, PA, Wanda J. Smith and Frances A. Miller both of Pittsburgh, PA and Esther M. Myers of Varnville, SC; grandchildren, Kelly Robey, David Smith, Tyler Smith, Samuel Slater and Daniel Slater; and great-grandchildren, Carter and Brody LaPorte, Gaby Smith, Cassie Slater and Grayson Slater. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Debbie D. Smith.
