David Bruce Hagger, 78, of Joppa, Maryland, passed away suddenly on January 20, 2025, in Naples, Florida. Born and raised in Allegan, Michigan, David lived a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories with his loved ones.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 44 years, Brenda Hagger (Smith), and their children: Tiffany Hagger, Jessica (Jimmy) Johnson, and Christopher (Brooke) Hagger. He was a proud grandfather to James Johnson III (JJ) and Lainey Hagger. He is also survived by his dear sisters, Terry Patton and Merry Kerber; brother-in-law Andrew (Pamela) Smith; sister-in-law Julie Reid; nieces and nephews James (Ann) Patton, Jonathon (Barbara) Patton, Michelle (Joe) McGrail, Alex (Amanda) Smith, Lauren Smith, and Morgan Reid; and his best friend and fellow fisherman, James Stewart. David was preceded in death by his parents, Edward C. and Jean E. Hagger, as well as his in-laws, William J. and Margaret B. Smith.
David was known for his humor and his love of "dad jokes." He had an uncanny ability to bring joy to those around him. He absolutely adored his grandchildren and had a special gift for connecting with animals, especially dogs. Residing on the water in Joppa, Maryland, he formed lasting friendships within his neighborhood and became well-known for hosting unforgettable July 4th celebrations for family and friends.
A dedicated professional, David spent many years working in the food industry before concluding his career at Towson University, managing their dining facilities. There, he forged meaningful relationships with coworkers who became like family to him.
David proudly served his country during the Vietnam War as a veteran of the United States Armed Forces. His service exemplified his resilience and commitment to others.
David's love for running was a defining part of his life. He participated in numerous races over the years, including the Last Train to Boston, the New York Marathon, and several Goofy Marathons at Disney World—an impressive challenge involving a half marathon one day, followed by a full marathon the next. An accomplished athlete in his youth, David ran the anchor leg of a record-setting 880-yard relay team—a record that still stands—and was inducted into the Allegan High School Hall of Fame for this achievement. Later in life, after undergoing hip replacement surgery, he embraced cycling as a way to maintain his active lifestyle.
David enjoyed spending winters as a snowbird in Naples with Brenda and treasured peaceful mornings watching turtles from their home on the water in Joppa, Maryland. Summers were equally special as he vacationed annually in Ocean City, New Jersey, with family and friends. His resilience, zest for life, and ability to find joy in simple pleasures will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held on January 31st at McComas Family Funeral Home, 1317 Cokesbury Rd., Abingdon, MD 21009. Visitation will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by the service at 12:00 p.m.
