Darrin Paul Furgason

September 25, 1972 — July 22, 2024

Aberdeen

Darrin Paul Furgason, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, passed away suddenly on July 22, 2024, at the age of 51.

Born in Baltimore, MD, Darrin was the son of James and Barbara (Griffin) Furgason. He graduated in 1990 from C. Milton Wright High School, where he played lacrosse. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering from Penn State in 1995. In 1996, he joined the staff at the Vulcan-Hart/ITW manufacturing facility in Dundalk. Darrin always described the people at Vulcan as a family, which is likely why he remained there for over 28 years eventually being promoted to Plant Manager. Since Vulcan makes commercial cooking equipment, Darrin was known to linger outside of restaurant kitchen doors to see what equipment was being used. He was even known to walk back into the kitchen and fix things or lend his expertise if the waiter said that they were experiencing an issue. Master wielder of the laser cutter, he annually organized stainless steel laser cut holiday ornaments that were given out as gifts.

Darrin’s first son, Luke, was born in 2000 with his first wife Kelly Marchand. Darrin was active with Luke’s Boy Scout troop and enjoyed hiking and camping in the woods.

Darrin married his soulmate Colynn LaBerge in a private ceremony on August 8th, 2008, which was later celebrated with a church ceremony on December 28th, 2008. Observers regarded this marriage as the proverbial “match made in heaven”, and frequently commented on how well-suited the couple was. Darrin and Colynn made their home on a multi-acre lot in Harford County, which became lovingly known as “Camp Furgason”.

Darrin and Colynn’s son, Roran James, was born in February of 2011. Darrin had Roran on ice-skates before age four and soon introduced him to his own sporting passion: ice hockey. As Roran progressed in youth hockey, Darrin served as a volunteer assistant coach for Roran’s teams at the Mite, Squirt, and PeeWee levels and continued his involvement at Roran’s current Bantam level. He was known as the “voice of reason” in the penalty box to young players. In addition to his volunteer coaching, Darrin himself continued to play for The Naughty Dogs (Beer League) and the Joe Rose Over 40 Hockey League at Ice World in Abington, MD several nights a week.

Darrin was known for his love of golf, snowboarding, music (rock or heavy metal), his Harley-Davidson Fat Boy, craps, espresso martinis, chicken wings, fixing things, being outdoors, and fireworks. This “King of Selfies” was known for his sarcasm, sense of humor, and infectious giggle that will be missed by all.

An active participant at Towson Presbyterian Church (TPC), Darrin served as a member of the Property Committee. His family also participated in the multiple mission trips to Honduras with other TPC members, where his construction and engineering skills were put to good use in creating eco-stoves and improvements to Casita Copan, a non-profit that provides holistic services to single mothers and their children.

Darrin is survived by his loving wife, Colynn; his sons, Luke Furgason, 24, and Roran Furgason, 13; his parents James and Barbara (Griffin) Furgason of Bel Air, MD; his sister, Valerie Campbell of Baltimore, MD; brother, James "Butch" Furgason (Cheryl Kaufman) of Bel Air, MD; his in-laws Chuck and Lorene LaBerge of Towson, MD; his sister-in-law Kelsen LaBerge (Nicholas Penney) of Twinsburg, OH; and brother-in-law Logan LaBerge (Alexis) and nieces (Penelope and Elliott) of Kalamazoo, MI; as well as an extensive network of close friends from each of his areas of interests.
