Dana Lang Tingler, age 85, of Edgewood, MD, died on August 9, 2011 at Bel Air Health and Rehabilitation in Bel Air, MD. Born in Paint Bank, VA, he was the son of the late George Lanham Tingler and Clara Bowers, and husband of the late Iris Virginia Turner Tingler. He attended school in Salem, VA and joined the Navy in 1943 to see the rest of the world. From 1950 to 1953, Dana completed various schools on submarine hydraulic and propulsion systems, and was assigned to submarine duty. After progressing up through the ranks, Dana became a Chief Petty Officer in 1952 and except for a two year stint as a Recruiter and Training Administrator; he remained on sub duty until his retirement in 1964.
In December 1964, Dana joined the Industrial Engineering Department for Bethlehem Steel and was assigned to the No. 2 Machine Shop. In 1966, he was transferred to the Methods Section and in 1972, to the Mobile Equipment Section to aid in implementing the Award Program. In 1974, he was promoted to Rate Setter. After retirement from Bethlehem Steel in 1984, Dana devoted more time to the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Department along with his son.
He is survived by his son, Gary and daughter-in-law, Cathy, of Edgewood, MD; brothers, Malcolm Tingler of VA and Tommy Tingler of NC; and sister, Jane Wertz of VA. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brother, Leo Tingler, and sister, Betty Garnett.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Abingdon Fire Company, 3306 Abingdon Road, Abingdon, MD 21009.
