Csm Harold Holzapfel U.S. Army (Ret.)

July 30, 1931 — October 15, 2010

Harold Owen Holzapfel, a retired Army Command Sergeant Major and decorated veteran of the Korean and Vietnam eras, died on October 15, 2010 at his home. He was 79 years old.

He held the top enlisted position of the U.S. Army Ordnance Center & School at Aberdeen Proving Ground from 1973 through 1976, when he retired with over 28 years of military service.

During his military career, he was stationed at Fort Ord California, Fort Lewis Washington, Fort Hood Texas, Fort Knox Kentucky, Fort Belvoir Virginia, Fort Riley Kansas, and seved three tours in Germany, two tours in Korea, a tour in Alaska, and a tour in Vietnam. His foreign service totaled more than 14 years.

He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, two Meritorious Service Medals, three Army Commendation Medals, nine Good Conduct Medals, National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, several foreign service and campaign medals, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm.

Born in Nashville, TN, he made his home in Bel Air following his retirement from the Army. In 1978, he accepted a position in Operations Management with Churchill Distributors in Baltimore where he remained active until his subsequent retirement in 1997.

Mr. Holzapfel is survived by his daughters, Connie S. Morris and husband, Danny, Cindy C. Brown and husband, Kent, and Mary C. Thieneman, all of Louisville, KY; six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Owen W. Holzapfel Jr. of Nashville, TN and Nolen M. Holzapfel of Panama City, FL; and beloved friends, Jeff and Patricia Moffit of Delta, PA. He was predeceased by his parents, Owen Wilson Holzapfel and Margaret Anna Osborne Spotswood.

Pallbearers were Kent Brown, Jeff Moffit, Adam Brown, and Paul Brown.
