CPT(R) Augustus "Gus" John LaComb II, age 67, of Joppatowne, MD, died July 5, 2009. Born in Ogdensburg, NY, he was the son of Katherine Elizabeth Sharland and the late Augustus John LaComb II. He enlisted in the Army in 1960, married Winsome Humphrey on July 11, 1964, received direct commission in VietNam; graduated from Benedictine College, Atchison, KS, in 1971. He spent the majority of his Army career in Europe working with nuclear weapons. He retired from active duty in 1981. He went back to work for the US Army as a civilian director of contracting; finishing the second career managing the destruction of the military's chemical weapons stockpile. He retired from civilian service in 2003. He and his wife spent a lot of time traveling after his retirement. They took two 2-month vacations running the roads (all 10 of them) in Alaska. They've seen every national park in the US and Canada. He usually spent the first 4 months of the year preparing taxes for family, friends, and neighbors on a pro-bono basis.
