Colonel Frank G. Messina, Baltimore County Police Dept. (Ret.), age 87, of Forest Hill, Maryland passed away on September 9, 2021, at Forest Hill Heights in Forest Hill, Maryland. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late Dominic and Katie (Garbo) Messina and husband of the late Esther Louise (Springer) Messina. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Frank graduated from Essex Community College in June of 1977 with an Associate in Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. He started his first assignment in 1959 by walking the block in Dundalk, he then went on to spend 28 years with Baltimore County Police Department, retiring in 1987 as a Colonel and the Chief of Field Operations Bureau. In the history of the Baltimore. Co. P.D.; he was the first Italian American to be promoted above the rank of Lieutenant, he was awarded three Unit Citations, three Commendation Ribbons and 85 letters of Commendation, from the President of the United States and below. He was a 1975 graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. and a 1981graduate of the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was also a graduate of the Homicide Investigation School at the Chief Medical Examiner's Office in Baltimore and Washington D.C. and was a Lieutenant in charge of the Major Case Unit.
After he retired, he set up the Campus Security office for Villa Julie College and worked as a consultant for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.
Frank is survived by his two daughters, Deborah A. Sickenberger and her husband, David and Patricia Kirk and her husband, Kelly; three grandchildren, Richard Sickenberger and his wife, Pamela, Rebecca Goehner and her husband, Kyle, and Todd and Julia Kirk; great grandchildren, Jesse Sickenberger, and Charlotte and Dylan Goehner; nieces and nephews, Mary Jane Thomas and husband, Ron, Ronald Parker and wife, Sara, Darlene Buchholz and spouse, Judi Griffith, Linda Buchholz, Dino, Kathy, Albert, and Mary Rose Messina. and Godson Brooks Poulsen; also survived by many other loving family members and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by brothers, Charles Messina, Joseph (Lucy) Messina; sisters, Sarah (Al) Biancucci, Angela (Bill) Parker, and Marie (Bill) Buchholz.
