Charles Edward Smith, age 93, of Bel Air, Maryland went to be with the Lord on Monday August 5, 2024.
Charles (Charlie) was a lifelong resident of Harford County. He was a 1948 graduate of Bel Air High School, and his younger years were spent working on the family farm in Calvary. Charlie was the longtime manager of the Sherwin-Williams paint store on Main Street in Bel Air, later moving the store to the current location on Baltimore Pike. He went on to work for the Farm Credit Bank in Harford County as a loan officer helping farmers secure loans for land and crops until his retirement. Charlie was a Master Mason at the Mt. Ararat Lodge #44, and a former member of The Optimist Club in Bel Air.
Charlie loved to fly and owned several airplanes during his lifetime. He was also an avid car collector and restorer, with several of his restorations achieving the AACA “Senior Award.” He was a longtime member of the Harford Region Antique Automobile Club, and with his wife Mary Grace, went on to establish the Vintage Motor Car Club of America, Upper Chesapeake Chapter.
He is survived by his daughter Jacqueline Barbieri (Smith) and husband Dominic, his granddaughter Michelle Lino (Barbieri) and husband Kevin, his grandson Nicholas Barbieri and wife Emily, and three great grandchildren Charles and Luciana Barbieri and Eleni Grace Lino, all of whom will fondly remember him as “Bebop.”
He was predeceased by Mary Grace Smith (Gettings) his wife of 67 years, his parents William and Margaret Smith of Bel Air, and brothers Louis, Wilbur, and Howard Smith.
