Charles H. Thomas, Sr., age 73, of Abingdon, MD passed away on March 11, 2016 at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, MD. Born in Bellevue, MD he was the son of the late Morris Alpheus Thomas and Etta Serina (White) Thomas and husband, for 37 years, to the late Marlene Bertha (Hoes) Thomas. Mr. Thomas attended Moton High School in Talbot County and then received his Bachelor of Science from Bowie State College in June 1965. It was at Bowie State that he met his sweetheart, Marlene, who he would later marry. He went on to become an educator with the Baltimore City Public School system for two years and then with Harford County Public Schools for 36 years. He taught at Joppatowne High School and transferred to Magnolia Middle School when it opened, where he taught 6th and 8th grades for almost 30 years. He received proclamations from the State of Maryland, as well as, the Harford County Delegates in recognition for his dedicated service to the students of the county. He enjoyed sports which included basketball, football and baseball. He was a member of the NAACP and the Joppatowne Jaycees. He and his wife were also involved in the Sickle Cell Walk-a-thons.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his son, Charles H. Thomas Jr. of Abingdon; brothers, Chester Thomas of Easton and Dwight Thomas of Bear, DE; sisters, Dolores Sasser and Geraldine Dill both of Easton, and Mary Alston of Brooklyn, NY; brother-in-law and friend, Edward Hoes of Glen Burnie; 13 nieces and 11 grand-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by an additional brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Havre de Grace High School, Marlene B. Thomas Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Head Secretary, 700 Congressional Avenue, Havre de Grace, MD 21078.
