Charles "Charlie" Valentine Duke

February 14, 1942 — May 2, 2021

Charles Valentine Duke, son of the late Hyatt A. Duke and Nettie C. Duke (nee Stone) was born in Waverly in Northeast Baltimore on February 14, 1942 and peacefully passed at his home in Bel Air on May 2, 2021.

The devoted father of two daughters, Denise M. Duke, her spouse, Susan E. Batterson and Kimberly M. Duke.

He is survived by his longtime companion and wife of 32 years, Angela F. Campbell, a sister, Carol (Duke) Richardson, his grandsons, Benjamin J. Campbell and Ian M. Campbell and granddaughter Michelle Campbell.

He was predeceased by brothers Robert G. Duke and Hyatt A. Duke.

Charles was a Life Member of the Society of the Ark and the Dove, being a direct descendent of the first 146 settlers of the country in who landed 1634, settling the proprietary province of Maryland.

He attended St. Bernard’s Catholic School, graduated from The Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1960 and attended Loyola College, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, receiving an Associate Arts Degree from the Community College of Baltimore in Traffic Engineering.

Charles started his career in the Bureau of Surveys of the Public Works Department for the City of Baltimore. He worked in the Grade, Computation, Bridge Engineering, Engineering Analysis and Complaint Sections, retiring after 36 years as the Chief of Alley and Footways in the Highway Division of the Bureau of Transportation. He was licensed by the State of Maryland as a Registered Professional Land Surveyor.

Charles worked part-time as an Assistant Credit Manager in the Credit Department of Sears Roebuck and Company in the Mondawmin, North Avenue and Security Square stores. He retired from Sears after 28 years of service.

Devoted to volunteer work, he was a Life Member of Kiwanis International and a Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Loch Raven.

Charles was voted Kiwanian of the Year in 2007 and 2012 and was presented the George F. Hixon Fellowship Award which is Kiwanis International’s highest honor and the Capital District Founders Award. He recently served as the club’s Secretary/Treasurer and has been the Secretary of the Club Foundation for the past 27 years.

He volunteered for 17 years at the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center in the Healthlink Community Resource Library. He was a concierge at the Kaufman Cancer Center and in the Blood Drawing Laboratory. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Volunteer Service Association.

Charles received recognition for his 22-gallons of blood donations to the American Red Cross.
He was a 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus Council #11372 where he was awarded ‘Knight of the Year’. He was the past Council Warden and past Council Advocate.

For many years, Charles was a devoted member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. He was elected to the Parish Council and was president of the St. Vincent de Paul Society Conference at the Church and the Society Representative for all of Harford County. He served as a director on the Baltimore Council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, being awarded the P. Francis Murphy Award for Social Ministry.

Charles also served as past President of the Evergreen Heights Community Association.
