Charles A. Hammerbacher

Charles A. Hammerbacher, age 77, of Abingdon, MD passed away on November 7, 2013 at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. Born in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Charles Francis and Elizabeth Mary Kapple Hammerbacher and husband of the late Theresa L. Hammerbacher (nee Leicht). He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines where he obtained the rank of Corporal. He was a Baltimore City firefighter for 23 years, where he retired in 1984, and was loved by all. He was dedicated to his profession and family, and always had a joke to tell and candy for his grandchildren. He enjoyed reading the paper from cover to cover every day and was a history buff. He was affectionately known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren and "Old Poppy" to his great grandchildren.

Mr. Hammerbacher is survived by his children, James E. Hammerbacher and wife, Linda of Punta Gorda, FL, Kimberly A. Beebe, Kimberly M. Hoffman and husband Bob of Bel Air, Nelson C. Hammerbacher of Baltimore and Terry L. Hooker and husband Ron, of Abingdon; brother, Kenneth Hammerbacher of Rosedale; sister, Barbara Ann Voynow of Baltimore and; grandchildren, Brad, Jamie, Christy, Eric, Amy, Brandon, Heather, Stefanie, Bradley, Nicholas, Lindsay, Ashleigh and Chelsea; and 10 great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and Jerome Hammerbacher; sisters, Rosemary Schnepf, Elizabeth O'Hara and Catherine Ritterpusch, and great grandson, Noah.
