Carl Frederic Ackerman

Carl F. Ackerman, age 89, died on February 3, 2011. Carl was born in 1921 in Williamsport, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania the son of the late Frederick J. and Mary Ackerman. He attended elementary schools in New London, Connecticut and Manchester, Connecticut, graduating in 1939 from Manchester High School. He was employed at Rogers Paper Manufacturing Company in Manchester from October 1939 to September 1946. In December 1941, he enlisted in the USMC, and was discharged honorably in 1945. He then attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Chemical Engineering.

From 1950 to 1972, he was employed at Union Mills Paper Manufacturing Company, with responsibilities including laboratory management, environmental protection operating systems, manufacturing, research, product development, technical services, purchasing, sales and general management as corporate Vice-President and Secretary.

From 1972 to 1976, he was employed by Superior Tube Company subsidiaries with responsibilities for technical evaluations of epoxy/acrylic polymer coating systems, mica paper applications/technology, and diamond die manufacture.

From 1977 to 1979, he was employed by Keene Corporation Laminates Division in East Providence, RI, as Manager of Technical Services. He returned to Rogers Corporation in Danielson, CT in 1980 with responsibilities as Senior Product Specialist and Manager of Customer Services and retired from there on December 7, 1990.

During his lifetime, he contributed resources and talents to the George Washington Council in Mercer County, NJ and Bucks County (PA) Council of the Boy Scouts of America; Trinity Episcopal Church, Solebury, PA; Technical Association of Pulp & Paper Industry; American Society for Testing & Materials, International; Institute of Electrical & Electronic Engineers; and International Electrotechnical Commission. His peers considered him a technical expert on electrical insulating material applications in equipment designed for operation at voltages up to 765, 000 volts.

He married Louise Sevin of New London, CT on September 10, 1949 in the Seabury Chapel of St. James Episcopal Church in New London, CT. They raised three children: Susan, Carl Jr. (Rick), and Joyce. He is survived by grandchildren, Jessica and Jacob Sommer and Samuel Ackerman; daughter-in-law, Katy Dallam; and son-in-law, Elliot Sommer.

A service and burial of cremated remains will be held at Trinity Church Cemetery, Solebury, PA in early June.
