CALVIN C. HARTUNG, age 89, of Bel Air, Maryland, died on May 15, 2008 at his home. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the son of the late John Henry and Ethel S. Fogwell Hartung. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during WWII in the 29th Division, participated in D Day, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service and valor. He was a member of American Legion Post #39 and the Disabled American Veterans. He worked at Aberdeen Proving Ground for 33 years as an Engineering Technician, serving as a test director for testing Infantry weapons. He retired from Government service in 1983. He enjoyed entertaining his many friends at his home, and always threw great parties.
Mr. Hartung is survived by his wife of 59 years, Betty Haselden Hartung of Bel Air, Maryland; a sister, Doris Clarke of Bainbridge Island, Washington; nieces Barbara Smith of Bel Air, Maryland, Judy Yocum of Bel Air, Maryland, Deborah Belichick of Weston, Massachusetts, Linda Althaus of Arnold, Maryland, Connie Sluder of Havre de Grace, Maryland; nephews Stuart Clark of Bainbridge Island, Washington, James Hartung of Aberdeen, Maryland; and adopted granddaughter, Melissa Maule of Bel Air, Maryland. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Vernon, John, Milton, and Phillip Hartung.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Upper Chesapeake Medical Foundation, Harford Hospice, 520 Upper Chesapeake Drive, Bel Air, Maryland 21014 or to the American Legion Post #39, 500 N. Hickory Ave., Bel Air, Maryland 21014. A memorial service will be held at a later time.
