C. Melvin Heimbach, age 92, of Bel Air, MD passed away on October 8, 2013 at his home. Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late George and Amelia Schnitzger Heimbach. A 1938 graduate of Calvert Hall High School, he was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving our country during WWII. He spent two years in the North Atlantic in Argentia, Newfoundland and two more years aboard the U.S.S. Sierra. At the time of his honorable discharge, he held the rank of Chief. He was instrumental in bringing soccer to Baltimore and in 1985 was nominated into the Maryland Soccer Hall of Fame. He formed the Combined Taverns Soccer Team in Baltimore and, for about 20 years, he refereed for colleges after which he retired with the top rating. Since the age of 18, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of St. Ignatius Catholic Church and the VFW.
Mr. Heimbach is survived by his wife of 69 years, Margaret A. Heimbach (nee Collins); son, Kenneth G. Heimbach and wife, Virginia, of Bel Air; daughter, Kathleen Schlehr and husband, Mark, of Fallston; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 8219 Town Center Drive, Baltimore, MD 21236-0025 and include senders name and address.
