C. Douglas (Doug) Layman, age 87, of Bel Air, MD, passed away on October 31, 2012 at University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. Born in Haines Falls, NY, he was the son of the late Floyd and Lula Mae Auten Layman. A vice-president with Compass Foods, which was a subsidiary of Great Atlantic and Pacific Company, he was in charge of their outside coffee sales. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving four years aboard the USS Camberra. A heavy cruiser, his ship was torpedoed in the South Pacific and had to be pulled into dry dock. He was a member of Christ Our King Presbyterian Church and was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. An avid golfer, he loved the Baltimore Orioles and was involved with Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity. Prior to moving back to Maryland he resided in Myrtle Beach, SC.
Mr. Layman is survived by his wife, Shirley Layman, of Bel Air, MD, with who he celebrated his 65th wedding anniversary in September 2012. He is also survived by his sons, Doug Layman and wife, Margie, of Hampstead, MD, Tim Layman and wife, Claire, of Wrentham, MA, Ray Cotton and wife, Sue, of Dayton, MD; daughters, Debbie Volk and husband, Ralph, of Bel Air, MD and Lynda Benjamine and fiancé, Jeff, of Owings Mills, MD; brother, Harold Layman and wife, Joan, of Mt. Ivy, NC; grandchildren, Kelly and Meissa, Dalayna and Brett, Jenna and Jesse, Connor, Jake, Jimmy, Ryan and Kyle; and great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jason, Hunter, Layla and Laynie and expecting two more great-grandchildren in March. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his son, James Layman; and sisters, Edna Morisette and Mildred Walsh.
Pallbearers were Brett Benjamine, Jesse Volk , Connor, Jake, Jimmy and Ryan Layman.
