BOBBY JOE ROBERTS, age 67, of Williamsburg, VA went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 15, 2003. He passed away at his home . Born in Fountain Green, MD on December 12, 1935 and raised on a farm in Churchville. He was the son of Mark A. and Bersie A. Roberts, and was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Roberts graduated from Bel Air High School in 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Army for three years of active duty and several more years of inactive duty. He was in Special Forces (Airbourne) and in the Medical Corps (surgery) serving as NCO of the operating room with a MASH hospital. Mr. Roberts attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association School in Memphis, TN and worked in the lumber industry for a number of years. He attended Lancaster Bible College and graduated form the Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, MO. He was in the ministry for over 20 years and was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hereford, MD for 12 years. He completed his masters degree in Pastoral Counseling from Loyola College in Baltimore. Mr. Roberts taught at Baltimore School of the Bible and had a daily radio broadcast for a number of years. He served on the Board of BCM International, a faith mission board, and was a member of the Corporation of Lancaster Bible College. In 1986, he made a career change and has been engaged in the Financial Services Industry, as a Registered Representative, as a stocker broker, and was doing financial planning for his clients. In 1996, he and a partner formed the Fowler Roberts Co., LLC, which is based in Williamsburg, VA.
Mr. Roberts has also served with The Gideons International and has been teaching/preaching at the Henrico County Jail for the last 4 years. In 2002, he went on a mission trip to Haiti.
Mr. Roberts is survived by his devoted wife of 45 years, Shirley Sawyers Roberts; a brother, Bill Roberts and his wife Jane of East Liverpool, Ohio; a sister, Betty Ann Conner and her husband. Millard Conner of Churchville, MD; and many nieces and nephews. Bob and Shirley did not have children, but he had many friends all over the country that were as close as family to him.
Pallbearers will be: Delroy Ross, Mike Smith, Rich Eschenbach, Dan Bollinger,
Richard Lippy, and Jim McManus, Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be: nephews, Chuck Bollinger, Michael Sawyers, Phillip Conner, Mark Conner, David Conner, members of the Williamsburg Camp of Gideon’s, and members of the James City County Ruritan Club.
