Betty O'Neill McComas passed July 19, 2009 at the age of 91, after a long and valiant struggle with a very aggressive cancer. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Charles H. McComas Jr., always known locally as "Junior" even at his current age of 94, and her son, Hank McComas 58, both of Bel Air. Daughter of State Senator Howard S. and Mary Madeleine Robinson O'Neill, she was the oldest of eight children. After a six year period as a teacher in the Harford County school system, Betty spent her life with her husband on and about the water, living on sailboats, delivering sailboats between Florida and Maryland, cruising in the Bahamas and spending winters in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and summers on the Chesapeake Bay. In later years, she moved on shore to care for her elderly father-in-law. Taking up golf, she was Maryland Golf and Country Club women's champion two years, a highlight of a long and active sporting life that included shooting, tennis, and fishing. She continued to spend winters in Florida traveling in their small RV. She was a vibrant, strong, and supportive mate in both senses of the word.
A private burial service will be conducted at Bethel church.
