Bernadette (Bernie) Beichler (nee Daley) passed away peacefully at the age of 96 at her daughter Judith’s home in Florida on November 20, 2021. A loving mother and grandmother, wife and sister, Bernie raised eight children, mostly as a single mother, holding them to high standards of conduct. Although she regretted not completing high school, she excelled in reading, math, and spelling and stressed the importance of education to her children. Bernie maintained excellent handwriting even as a nonagenarian. She sent birthday cards to an extensive list of relatives and friends. Bernie also loved to receive greeting cards and letters. She was a voracious reader and completer of scores of jigsaw puzzles over the years. She loved to crochet and created many blankets for family, babies, and friends. One of Bernie’s most recent accomplishments was raising $900 for a local Meals on Wheels on her 95th birthday by seeking donations rather than gifts. Bernie also loved to watch game shows, especially Jeopardy which she faithfully enjoyed over many years. Bernie kept her weekly hair appointments and received compliments on her manicures and pedicures. A lover of seafood, she taught her children to pick steamed crabs (so she could eat her own in peace). An excellent cook, some of her famous recipes included sour beef & dumplings and Kruschiki.
Bernie was predeceased by six siblings and her husband Wesley. She is survived by her eight children and their spouses: Teresa Filbert (William), Charles Helm (Lu), Bradley Helm (Sunbae), Wendy Hansen (Steven), Judith Murdoch (Charles), David Helm (Lisa), Melissa Marciniak (Thomas), Jeffry Helm (Jill). She also enjoyed 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends also mourn Bernie’s passing.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Bernie’s name to one of the following: Englewood Meals on Wheels, 400 Loma Linda, Englewood, FL 34223 or Tidewell Hospice Center, 5955 Rand Blvd., Sarasota, FL 34238 or tidewellfoundation.org.
