Rebecca Watts Guercio, a retired Harford County educator, died at home in Bel Air on August 17th after a prolonged battle with lung cancer. She was 61.
Born on April 28, 1945 she was raised in Marblehead, MA, and was a graduate of Marblehead High School, and Bethany College in West Virginia. She taught in Harford County schools for 30 years and completed her Master’s degree in education at Towson State College. Upon retirement, her love of animals led her to become the successful owner of Hooves and Paws, a pet sitting business, which she operated for ten years. She was named to the Nationwide Register’s Who’s Who in Executives and Business in 2001. A life-long dog and horse owner, she won various awards at shows and competitions, and authored a monthly equine column called “Barn Chatter” in The Sporting Times magazine. She was a member of the American Morgan Horse Association, the Mid-Atlantic Morgan Club, and the American Spaniel Club. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph F. Guercio (Bel Air, MD), and her father Dr. Winthrop F. Watts (Vero Beach, FL). She is survived by her mother Sylvia S. Watts (Vero Beach, FL), her brother Dr. Winthrop F. Watts, Jr. (Eagan, MN), sister-in-law Linda K. Watts, JD (Eagan, MN), brothers-in law Paul and Henry Guercio (Bel Air, MD) and nephews Winthrop M. Watts (Rosemount, MN), and Michael C. Watts (Eagan, MN).
Rebecca’s ashes will be laid to rest in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Salem, MA with other members of the Watts family.
