Barbara Hall Voorhees

February 12, 1922 — October 2, 2012

Barbara Ann Hall Voorhees, age 90, of Glen Arm, MD, formerly of Elmira died on October 2, 2012, after an extended illness. She was the daughter of Margaret H. Hall and Herman S. Hall. She was born in Arlington, MA, raised in New Britain, CT and spent her summers on Leetes Island, CT. She also lived in Nuremburg, Germany while her husband served in the U.S. Army. Barbara graduated from Simmons College in 1945 with a B.S. in Nursing. She worked at Brigham Women and Children's Hospital and after moving to Elmira the Arnot Ogden Hospital. She was a member of the Elmira Junior League and Park Church, where she served on the Board of Education and taught Sunday school for many years. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, concerts, following the Boston Red Sox and spending time with her family and dogs. She volunteered with the Elmira City Schools, a literacy program, Arnot Ogden Hospital and the Arnot Art Museum.

She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Charles H. Voorhees, M.D. and sister, Alice H. O'Connell. She is survived by her daughters, Martha K. Voorhees Barnes (Thomas) of Springdale, AR, Nancy H. Voorhees Balenske (Kenton) of Annapolis, MD, Ann H. Voorhees Kirchner (Stephen) of Fallston, MD, Elizabeth H. Voorhees Aiello (Paul) of Merrimack, NH, Margaret H. Voorhees Wood (Garry) of Clay, NY; her son, Peter C. Voorhees (Karen) of Mooresville, NC; her grandchildren, Cathy, Rob, Meredith, Christopher, Lauren, Elizabeth, Meg, Margaret, Christine, and Alex; her great-grandchildren, Matteo, Luca and Dante; her sister, Margaret R. Hoar of Pensacola, FL; brother-in-law, Neal H. O'Connell of Mystic, CT; and five nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her step-grandchildren, Kevin Kirchner, Greg Kirchner and Lindsay Kirchner Delaney.

A private graveside and Memorial Service will be held on a date to be determined which will be conducted by the Rev. Felicity White at Park Church, Church St., Elmira, NY.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial gifts to Tanglewood Nature Center, 443 Coleman Avenue, Elmira, NY 14903 or Glen Meadows Foundation, Inc., 11630 Glen Arm Road #1, Glen Arm, MD 21057-9470.
