Barbara Evelyn Armiger of Baltimore, MD, died on September 20, 2016 at the age of 94. Born in Baltimore to William J. and Barbara Eugenie (Cook) Armiger, she completed her studies from the Samuel Ready School in 1940, and then attended Church Home and Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1943.
She was inducted into the US Army Nurses Corps in July of 1944, and assigned to the 126th Evacuation Hospital, Army Nurse Corps, at Camp Van Dorn, Mississippi. In December 1944 she shipped out to the European Theatre of Operations through Scotland, in the United Kingdom, where she was stationed until early 1945. She then served in Devizes, England at the 141st General Hospital from February thru March 1945, was in Belgium in April 1945, and finally went on to Jena, Germany. While there she performed general medical and surgical nursing of the sick and injured, including some of the prisoners of war and concentration camps, after they were liberated from the Germans at the close of World War 2. Barbara was discharged in January of 1946 as a 1st Lieutenant in the US Army Nurses Corps, and later was employed as a nurse at the Bethlehem Steel Corporation Sparrows Point Hospital.
She was a member of the "Eastern Star," a Freemasonic appendant organization, as well as a Lifetime Member Alumni at the Church Home Hospital School Of Nursing.
Miss Armiger is survived by her nephew, John Spencer Wilkinson, Sr.; great nephews Jay and Todd Wilkinson; great great nephews, Ethan, Chase, and Atley Wilkinson, as well as the extended families of her brother Jesse Armiger, and her sister Alice Armiger (Fugate).
She was predeceased by her siblings, Vera Armiger (Wilkinson), Jesse Armiger, Alice Armiger (Fugate), Florence Armiger, William Armiger, as well as half-sisters, and extended family on her father's side.
