Arthur Frank Kunes, 92, died on May 3, 2011 at the Monkton home of daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Bill Randall. Husband of his beloved wife, the late Dorothy M. Kunes (nee Wolff), he is also survived by daughter Kathy Kimes and her husband Brian, of Rockville, Md., son Arthur Kunes, III, of Baltimore, son David Kunes and his wife Nancy of Joppatowne, brother Kenneth Kunes and his wife Annette of Scotsdale, Az., as well as seven grandchildren.
Born in Chicago on May 10, 1918, Mr. Kunes was raised in the nearby town of Maywood, Illinois. A veteran of World War II, he graduated from the University of Illinois with a Master's degree in microbiology in 1948, subsequently serving as a medical technician in the U.S. Army's 21st Evacuation Hospital in Pusan, Korea in 1951. Mr. Kunes worked primarily in the food industry, with jobs including that of manager of the Red Star Yeast Company plant in Belle Chase, La., and as production manager of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company coffee division plant in Landover, Md.
As a Boy Scout leader in New Orleans (and later a Cub and Boy Scout leader in Harford County), Mr. Kunes was known for the high percentage of his scouts who reached the rank of Eagle. He and his wife lived on Latimer Road in Joppatowne for 38 years, and enjoyed traveling, especially to Great Britain and Ireland, in their later years. An avid reader, Mr. Kunes also enjoyed winemaking and being a ham radio operator, with the call sign N3HLT.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 12022 Jerusalem Road in Kingsville. Visitation will begin at 10 AM, with the service at 11 AM. Interment and luncheon reception to follow at St. Paul's.
