Arthur "Art" C. Holdaway Jr.

June 12, 1930 — July 28, 2014

Arthur Cornealius Holdaway Jr. was born June 12, 1930 on Buck Mountain in Grayson County, VA to Arthur Cornealius Holdaway Sr. and Missouri (Ward) Holdaway, the fourth of six children. He died on July 28, 2014 at his residence in Fallston, MD at the age of 84 years, one month and 16 days.

As a young boy he was known as Junior, June, J.R. and Blackie. He attended Bridal Creek School. After school he worked in a cotton mill in Fries, VA. In 1946 he went to Maryland and worked at the Aberdeen Proving Ground. When he was 21, he joined the United States Air Force in 1952, taking his basic training at Sampson Air Force Base, Sampson, New York. He served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. After serving his country for 25 years, he retired from Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, NE. He returned to Maryland where he purchased and ran a bar known as the Eagles Nest for three years. He sold the bar and worked from 1980-1988 in Saudi Arabia. He was a member of the VFW, Moose Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed dabbling in smooth moonshine and his hero was Popcorn Sutton. He enjoyed family gatherings, friends, music, traveling, animals, hunting, fishing, hiking, exploring and adventure, but most of all he loved life.

Arthur is survived by his longtime companion, Janet Hansen of Fallston, MD, a daughter and son-in-law, Debi and Jeff Frailer of Las Vegas, NV, a son Lewis Holdaway of North Pole, AK, the mother of his children, Etta Ruth Holdaway of Las Vegas, NV, his companion's son and wife, Owen and Monica McCullough of Seward, NE, a daughter and special friend Anissa Meduna and Wayne Servantez of Torrington, WY. Also grandchildren, Tasha Frailer, Adrianna Holdaway Green, Brittnay Truno, Brandon and Ty Holdaway, Tiberius and Katelyn McCullough; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Virginia Long of Darlington, MD and Ruth Knopp of Delta, PA; brothers-in-law, Hubert Osborne, Herbert Sturdivant of Independence, VA, Fred Sturdivant and wife Pernetta of Stuarts Draft, VA, William Snyder of Dayton, OH; sister-in-law, Ollie Sturdivant of Sparta, NC; aunt, Pearl Holdaway of Marion, VA; numerous nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, sister, Drucie Osborne, brothers, Grayson and unnamed brother who lived nine days, sisters-in-law Joyce Holdaway, Dorothy Wheatley, Wanda Sturdivant, Betty Sndyer, Dora Lee Sturdivant, Bessie Sturdivant and Louise Sturdivant; brothers-in-law, Worley Long, Albert Knopp, Jim Wheatley, Curtis, Thomas and Dewey Sturdivant.
