Alma Catherine Viol, a 48-year resident of Joppa, died May 29, 2015 at her home. She was 89. She was the wife of the late Charles A. Viol, Jr. to whom she had been married to for 48 years prior to his death in 1997.
Born April 16, 1926 in Detroit, MI, she was the daughter of the late Charlotte M. (Landry) McKinnon and John A. McKinnon. Her mother died when she was an infant. Her father died when she was a young child. She lived her early childhood years with her maternal grandparents in Sydney, Nova Scotia.
After graduating from Saint Ann High School in Detroit, she worked as a secretary for Chrysler Corporation. She left the workforce after she married and started her family. With her husband's job with the C&O and B&O Railroad they transferred from Michigan to Virginia, onto Ohio and then settled in Maryland. She was a prior member of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Joppatowne.
She loved music, was a self-taught organist and had a beautiful singing voice. She was a skilled seamstress and a superb cook. She loved to crochet and made dozens of blankets for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed a lifetime of camping with her husband and children and traveled extensively throughout the eastern U.S. and Canada. She spent many winters in Florida with her husband.
She is survived by a son, Charles A. Viol III of Edgewood; three daughters, Charlotte M. Cumbie of Liberty, N.C., Janet A. Viol-Thomas of Abingdon and Ann Marie Viol of Joppatowne, five grandchildren and a half-brother.
In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by a half-brother, half-sister and step-mother.
Pallbearers were Charles Viol III, Richard Cumbie, Marshall McCloud, Chris Hardy, David Thomas and Matthew Thomas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alma's name and sent to Family & Children's Medical Adult Day Services, 309 Thomas Run Road, Bel Air, MD 21015.
