Alfred L. Cawthorne

February 27, 1951 — April 24, 2010

Alfred L. Cawthorne, age 59, of Belcamp, MD, died on April 24, 2010 at his home.

Born in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of Julia Cawthorne of Baltimore, MD and the late Norman Edward Cawthorne. Growing up in Baltimore, he was a 1970 graduate of Northwestern High School and a 1975 graduate of Coppin State University, where he earned his Degree in Special Education, and then taught for 13 years in Baltimore City Public Schools. While attending Coppin State, he met his wife, Sondra. He also became a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.

After teaching, he started with Giant Foods on a part-time basis, and then went full time for 20 years, mostly working in the Deli Department. He loved family, the ocean, traveling to Virginia Beach and Myrtle Beach, and gardening. With his love of technology and his creative spirit, he spent his spare time working on numerous projects and tinkering in his shed. He also loved playing scrabble with his wife and winning, especially since she is an English teacher. He dedicated his life to Christ in 1983 at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Baltimore, where he was a Sunday school teacher and worked with the Ambassadors for Christ Boys Club, where he was known for his winning soap box derby cars. In 2009 he rededicated his life to Christ at the Ames United Methodist Church.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife, Sondra O'Neal Cawthorne of Belcamp, MD; son, Anthony Lee Cawthorne Sr. and wife, Michelle, of Edgewood, MD; daughters, Alexandra Lee Cawthorne of Northwest Washington, DC and Alisha Lee Langston and husband, Jovan Brooks Langston, of Belcamp, MD; brothers, Morris Brown of Columbia, MD, Larry, Ralph, and Vincent Cawthorne, all of Baltimore, MD; sister, Elaine Cromwell of Baltimore, MD; and grandchildren, Anthony Lee Cawthorne Jr. of Edgewood, MD and Zahara Marie and Cassandra Lee Langston of Belcamp, MD. In addition to his father, he was predeceased by his brother, Norman Cawthorne Jr. and sister, Betty Cawthorne.
